I have found this site very useful whilst researching my grandfather and g/f 's brother
TIMOTHY DWYER who was killed in action on the 8th May 1915 at the 2nd battle of Ypres at Frezenberg , I believe . Do you have any other information on Timothy who was from Tredegar?

My Grandfather, Serjeant Robert Charles Jones, Service Number 75 was killed 2nd May 1915 at Ypres, remembered on panel 50, Menin Gate. Carnage. So dreadfully sad, thousands of families, almost beyond human comprehension how it could have happened. I think every single youngster should visit the battlefields to understand this is recent history which very likely had a direct effect on their own family--not many families escaped without some loss in 1914-18. Good luck to the lads in Afganistan, come home safely.

Walter David Morris went to france in Nov 1914, his name is part of the original embarkation roll of the regiment. His death in 1916 was at a time when the battalion were serving on the Somme. By this time the regiment had become the Pioneer Battalion. Does anyone have any records of the action about men moving from Mailly Wood to dig new front line trenches from Redan to Ancre? Please contact me at the above e-mail.
Peter.

Hi Peter,

This is a brilliant web site. I'm doing research on the people recorded on the memorial roll in our church in Bucknell. One of the them, WR Morgan, was killed on 29 December 1915 at Elverdinghe Chateau. The photos of the chateau suddenly makes this tragic story come alive.
Just a small point - Pte W R Morgan's service number, according to the CWG site is 2189, not 3189!
I can fill you in with a few more details on WR Morgan if you are interested.

This truly is a brilliant website, came across it totally by accident. Maybe someone kind soul may take pity and find my grandfather on the Absent Voters list. Thomas John Roberts was born in Blaina in 1880 (although his daughter argues that he was born 14th August 1879). I do believe he was a part of this regiment, can anyone help me find his army number on the Absent Voters list?

I am reseaching my great-uncle who was killed on 26th June 1915 at Ypres. I have read Dr John Dixon's account (Questionable Expertise) and he alludes to some Canadian relatives of Stephen's in his piece. Is there anyway I could contact John by email so that I could get more information.
Being a Sergeant in 1915 I would assume that Stephen was a career soldier - do you have any records of his service, when he signed-up etc.
Also, his brother-in-law, my great grandfather David Henry Williams (31132) also served with the 3rd Mons as a private (apparently also a band member playing the drum). Apart from his medal record do you any information about him. He survived the war.

Thanks

Tony Griffiths

I was trying to find more detail about the Monmouthshire Regiment and accidently found this site.
I have enjoyed reading it, especially the laymans language, it did not lose me in jargon.
I am currently researching my family history and have started to sort out the photographs. The one photograph in particular, is of 12 platoon, whilst in France, one of the soldiers was my father, Clarence Herbert Palmer, bn 9/12/1896. His parents lived in Pontnewydd.
I wondered whether or not this would be of interest to you ?

Only just getting back into my research. Shortly after you contacted me with info about my Grandfather, WJ Trace, in November 2006, my mother fell and broke her leg. She spent most of the past 20 months in hospital and finally passed away on July 14th. I will now resume my research of her father's time in WW1 in order that I can find out all the things she wanted to know and document them in our family tree. Anyway...great site, keep up the good work!

does anybody know family details of Private Bradley?
A William Bradley served for some years in the Mons. and Newport Territorials before emigrating to Australia in about 1912.
He joined the AIF and was killed at Gallipoli in 1915.
I would like to establish if they are of the same family.

I've today found part of what I believe to be a white metal Monmouthshire Regiment cap badge in a field in Llanvaches. In order to discover which regiment it represented I found and read the history of the Regiment.
The web site makes sad but fascinating reading.
I wonder who the badge belonged to and just how it came to be in that field?

I have many digital copies of photos of my Great Grand Father (Sergeant/Sargeant Peter Huelin). I was trying to find any references but couldn't identify any other than a Group photo of Sargeants. I have a similar more formal version, a clear photo, mine refers to Sudbrook Camp 1st Mon Regt June 1915

This is what has lead me to believe that he was in the 1st Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment and was serving in June of 1915

Please reply if you can further my search

What an excellant site to find. I have looking into my cousins grandfather - Richard James Matthews who is listed on his son's birth certificate (Herbert Grenfield Matthews born 29 Sep 1914) as being a private in 3rd Monmouth Regiment (colliery Haulier) living at 121 King Street Cwm, his wife is Isabella Matthews nee Chappell.
From what I gather from your site he may at that time been either just called up or been a volunteer in reserve.
I do not have his service number.
If anyone has any information or advice to proceed further I would be most grateful.

Hi - Excellent site.

My wife’s grandfather Thomas short from Newport was stationed here in Northampton, his marriage certificate says he was in the 1st Bn in 1916 when he married a local girl Elizabeth Walker.
I read on the site that the HQ was in the St James Institute Hall here in Northampton, well hall still stands in its original location although the fields that the regiment trained on are full of houses now.
Your site enabled us to know much more about the regiment and its location in Northampton
Thanks very much

Hi - Excellent site.
Living as I do just outside Bow Street, I was most interested in the photos of the Mons in Bow Street in 1910 from where they would have undergone long route marches and manoeuvres on Plynlumon.
Not many Mons men in the Aberystwyth area but I have a photo of Capt NGNK Lewis, kia Sept 1917, who is commemorated on the war memorial in Aber. I have visited his grave on numerous occasions near Ypres.
I also have a plaque and trio to 537730 Pte Trevor Cross, dow 1916 when with the 9th Welsh.

My Great Uncle Arthur Edmunds Workman died at Frezenberg Ridge (his middle name was Edmunds not Edmond - he was named after his mother's maiden name). I have been researching the 3rd Mons for a while now, but I was very impressed with the work you have done. You have filled some holes I have got in my research. At the moment I am going through the Roll of Honour and plotting where they are all buried and possibly where they died. I have had some problems finding all the names on CWGC. I'll now check my list against yours. Spent a long time in Aber library looking at the Chronicle records. Some interesting letters and reports there. Keep up the good work!
